Interior Minister Moshe Arbel announced on Monday evening that the elections in most local authorities will be held on January 30, 2024, after they were postponed due to the outbreak of the war in Gaza.
At the same time, elections will be postponed even further in towns that were evacuated due to the war. According to the decision of the Minister of the Interior, elections in evacuated localities will be held only five months after the return of the evacuated residents.
A few days after the outbreak of the war, the Ministry of the Interior initiated a law stating that the local elections would be postponed by at least three months.
The local elections were supposed to be held on October 31, five years after the last local elections held in 2018.
A similar case occurred in 1982, due to the Lebanon War, when it was decided to postpone the local elections by a year, something that provoked criticism in the opposition at the time.
