German Chancellor Olaf Scholz on Wednesday afternoon praised the approval of an agreement to release a few dozen civilians held hostage by Hamas in exchange for over 100 convicted terrorists.

"The agreement on the release of some hostages is good news," he said, adding that in his opinion, "The Israeli government has done the right thing."

"We thank all the governments involved and continue to support them diplomatically to ensure that this agreement is successfully implemented."

Also on Wednesday, UK Foreign Secretary David Cameron praised the deal, calling it "a crucial step towards providing relief to the families of the hostages and addressing the humanitarian crisis in Gaza."

"This pause provides an important opportunity to ensure much greater volumes of food, fuel and other life-saving aid can reach Gaza on a sustained basis. We have already doubled our aid commitment to Palestinians this year and will work closely with the UN to ensure it reaches those who need it," he stressed.
