King Mohammed VI of Morocco on Wednesday invited Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to visit Morocco.
The invitation was extended in a warm personal letter in which the King thanked the State of Israel for its willingness to recognize Morocco's sovereignty over the Western Sahara.
King Mohammed VI wrote to the Prime Minister that "the visit will open up new possibilities for strengthening relations between our countries."
Following the invitation, National Security Adviser Tzachi Hanegbi and Morocco's Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita agreed to coordinate a date for Prime Minister Netanyahu's first visit to Morocco.
Israel earlier this week joined the US in recognizing Moroccan sovereignty over Western Sahara. Then-US President Donald Trump agreed to recognize Morocco’s sovereignty over the Western Sahara as part of the 2020 deal in which Morocco became the fourth Arab country to normalize ties with Israel.
The United States later adopted a new official map of Morocco that includes Western Sahara.
