MK Gilad Kariv (Labor) spoke to Israel National News on Wednesday and commented on the negotiations over the judicial reform and the possibility that those negotiations will bear fruit.
"There is a side that wants a compromise and a side that is busy waging war. The protest what stopped the legislation in the previous session of the Knesset, so my expectation is that Lapid and Gantz will report back to the public that elected them on what is going on," said Kariv.
He stated that he has no confidence in the coalition. "Netanyahu proved once again that the man simply does not miss an opportunity to break promises and to lie. The man pledged to the President that there would be no sabotage in the process of the Judicial Selection Committee, this was part of the basis for the talks in the President's Residence. Probably the only thing on which there is agreement in the Knesset is that Netanyahu is an unreliable person."
Despite the withdrawal from the talks and the strong opposition to the conduct of the coalition, Kariv said he does not rule out the judicial reform as an idea.
"I think that it is definitely necessary to define what the special status of the Basic Laws is, [and] we can certainly talk about the procedure in which the Supreme Court conducts a judicial review. I am also ready to talk about the reasonability issue, I am ready to talk about the question of how to handle a dispute between a minister and a legal advisor. But there is nothing in the government's proposals to indicate that they want a balanced debate. They want political subjugation instead of reforms in the system, and we cannot agree to that," he explained.
