With the conclusion of Rabbi Gershon Edelstein's funeral on Tuesday night, Nof Hagalil Mayor Ronen Plot announced that he would name a street after the rabbi.
Rabbi Edelstein, a leader of the Lithuanian-haredi community and the dean of the Ponevezh Yeshiva, died Tuesday morning. He was 100.
In an announcement, Plot said, "With great sadness and deep pain, Nof Hagalil received the sad and bitter news of the passing of the great rabbi and yeshiva dean, Rabbi Yerachmiel Gershon Edelstein, may his righteous memory be for a blessing."
"Rabbi Edelstein served for decades as the head of the Ponevezh Yeshiva in Bnei Brak, and served as President of the Degel Hatorah party's Council of Torah Sages. He dedicated his life to his thousands of students, and spent his entire life learning Torah. He led the haredi community with courage and with great humility.
"On a personal level, the residents of Nof Hagalil owe the rabbi a great debt of thanks, for encouraging and investing in the Har Yonah C neighborhood, and instructing his students to live in Nof Hagalil. In order to immortalize his pure memory, I intend to submit to the City Council members a proposal to name a street in the neighborhood after him, when the initial thirty-day mourning period ends."
