Ilya Domnovitch and his seven-year-old son Uri have regained consciousness nearly one week after they were critically injured in a serious traffic collision on Israel's Independence Day, Soroka Medical Center announced this afternoon (Tuesday).

Uri, who had been kept on a ventilator for five days with a serious head injury, is now breathing on his own and is now listed in moderate condition. Ilya is also now breathing on his own but will require further surgeries.

The hospital stated that its staff is "happy about the improvement in their condition and continues to provide them with dedicated and optimal care."

Uri's mother, Ayala, who was also moderately injured in the accident, visited her son in his hospital room after he woke up.

The family's youngest child, one-year-old Ma'ayan, was killed in the accident. Two of their other children were moderately injured in the accident and have been released from the hospital.

The driver of the vehicle which collided with the family's car has been arrested and faces charges of negligent homicide and driving under the influence.
