With profound interest I notice the similarities between Sweden’s acknowledgement of Palestine and the French proposal that is due to happen after the 30th of June.
What the French are actually saying to the Palestinians is: Don’t negotiate with Israel and we will unilaterally acknowledge your state.
Palestinians have nothing to gain from negotiating with Israel. Those who thought otherwise are wrong. Sweden and France prove that terrorism and decades of rejections by the Palestinians pay off. Without giving up anything they’ll gain everything.
In Ynet it is being explicitly understood: “The plan stipulates the formation of a Palestinian state in the pre-1967 lines, with swaps of mutually agreed upon lands similar in size, while taking into account Israel's security needs.
The French are seeking to achieve a "just, sustainable and global solution" to the conflict. If a two-state solution is not reached by the end of the 18 months of talks, France will announce it is officially recognizing the State of Palestine.”
What is the purpose of negotiating if one, at the end of the day, will recognize something regardless of the outcome?
The French and the Swedes are actually doing the same fatal mistake the Obama administration did. By radicalizing their positions they are radicalizing the Palestinians. The greatest example of this is the approach to the Jewish communities in Judea and Samaria, some with tens of thousands of residents and over forty years old, commonly misnamed "settlements".
Hilary Clinton has admitted that pressuring solely Israel helps radicalize Palestinians. She has stated: “In retrospect, our early, hard line on settlements didn't work," that the demand ultimately served to harden Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas's stance against Israel, which led to the collapse of the talks.
These are Abbas' own words: “It was Obama who suggested a full settlement freeze,” Abbas explained. “I said OK, I accept. We both went up the tree. After that, he came down with a ladder and he removed the ladder and said to me, jump. Three times he did it.”
Both France and Sweden are now sidestepping international law. Make no mistake. Sweden’s acknowledgement of Palestine was made in an effort to gain a place in UNSC 2017. With France following Sweden’s lead one needs to ask: Could it be that Europe wants a Palestinian state more than the Palestinians themselves?
