Did the "clourd by day and fire by night" mean that the Israelites continued to travel at night leading the Egyptians to realize they were not coming back (thus leading to Pharaoh's attempt to get them to return) as one commentator says, or that the fire lit up the area for those who travelled more slowly and caught up at night as another writes? Is there another message?
