Israeli security forces foiled an attempt to smuggle ancient coins out of the Gaza Strip, the Israeli Defense Ministry reported Thursday afternoon.

According to the Defense Ministry, two coins dating back to the time of Alexander the Great roughly 2,400 years ago were found in purses during security checks at a crossing point between Israel and the Gaza Strip.

The smuggling attempt was foiled at the Erez Crossing Thursday, when border officials from the Defense Ministry found the coins hidden inside purses being shipped in mail bags from Gaza into Israel.

The coins were confiscated by the Defense Minister and transferred to the Israel Antiquities Authority.
