Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah on Tuesday held a telephone call with Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh, Hezbollah's Al-Manar television network reported.
Nasrallah reportedly expressed his condolences over the death of the “martyrs” who were killed when Israel destroyed a terror tunnel leading from Gaza into Israel earlier this week.
The Hezbollah leader stressed that the group stands by Hamas and Islamic Jihad as well as the rest of the “resistance movements” of in the face of “the Zionists and their allies in the region”, according to Al-Manar.
The two underscored the solidarity among the regional resistance movements, stressing solidarity and cooperation to confront the future challenges, the report said.
Separately, reported Haaretz on Wednesday, Nasrallah recently met with Salah al-Aruri, the new deputy leader of Hamas.
The conversation between the two reportedly focused on the current reconciliation process between Hamas and its rival Fatah after a decade of political division and hostility.
Under the agreement reached between Hamas and Fatah earlier this month, the Palestinian Authority (PA) is to resume full control of Hamas-controlled Gaza by December 1. That process began on Wednesday, when the PA assumed responsibility for the Gaza border crossings instead of Hamas.
A statement issued by Hezbollah following the meeting tried to emphasize the connections between the group and Hamas. It said the two groups had common cause as resistance organizations and who cooperate against Israeli aggression, noted Haaretz.
Hezbollah's announcement also said that Nasrallah had also spoken with Ramadan Shalah, the leader of the Islamic Jihad terrorist group, and sent his condolences after eight of its terrorists, including two senior commanders, were killed in the explosion of the terrorist tunnel on Monday.
The Islamic Jihad, much like Hamas, has enjoyed support from Iran, which is also Hezbollah's chief backer. Last year, Iran pledged to provide $70 million in annual assistance to terror group's "jihad" against the State of Israel.
