Jake Platt, a senior at Vestavia Hills High School in Alabama with Down Syndrome, took the final handoff and sped into the end zone, to raucous cheers from fans that reached decibel levels rivaling those heard in professional football stadiums.
It took place at Friday night's preseason game against Briarwood Christian School.
"My brother, Jake, is 18 and a senior at Vestavia. He also happens to have Down Syndrome. Tonight two teams helped to make his dream come true!" his sister Amy Hyde tweeted.
While the play was pre-arranged, the love shown by the Vestavia fans was authentic. Platt was carried off the field by players on both teams, and did a touchdown dance to wild applause.
It was one of the most moving things that I've ever seen," Vestavia Hills coach Buddy Anderson told AL.com, which Alabama sports.
Pratt attended every summer workout and weight-lifiting session and his parents approached the coaching staff about allowing him to dress for a game after several seasons of serving as a manager.
"My brother was not just handed this,” Jake’s sister Amy wrote after sharing the video on Twitter. “He is actually on the team. He goes to every practice and does every drill. He works out on his own too.”
