Former US President Barack Obama on Saturday responded on Twitter to the violence in Charlottesville, Virginia.

One person was killed and nineteen injured when a white supremacist rammed his car into a group of counter-protesters in Charlottesville.

Quoting Nelson Mandela, Obama tweeted, "No one is born hating another person because of the color of his skin or his background or his religion."

"People must learn to hate, and if they can learn to hate, they can be taught to love. For love comes more naturally to the human heart than its opposite."

Obama's tweet captured Twitter users' hearts, and has a record 2.9 million "likes."

The previous record was held by American singer Ariana Grande-Butera, when she responded to the Manchester terror attack which killed 22 people last May.

Mandela, a South African anti-apartheid revolutionary, politician, and philanthropist, served as his country's president from 1994-1999.
