A couple is being questioned by police and firefighters on suspicion of having caused a forest fire in Jerusalem by using an improvised barbecue on Monday.

The couple as not been identified, other than being from southern Israel.

The Jewish National Fund estimates that 50 to 60 dunams (50 to 60,000 square meters) of trees went up in flames. The trees had been planted in the 1950s.

Dozens of tourists were also evacuated from the region.

The National Parks Authority has put out a warning to the public, noting that it is forbidden to light fires in nature reserves and national parks, except in designated facilities. Anyone who lights a fire is responsible for ensuring that it is extinguished before leaving. It is also forbidden to light toilet paper and wet wipes.
