Israeli actor and director Assi Dayan has passed away. He died Thursday morning at his apartment in north Tel Aviv. Dayan was 68, his family said. His funeral is scheduled for Sunday at 4:00 p.m. in the Haifa-area community of Nahalal.

Dayan is considered one of the most influential figures in Israel's cinema industry. The youngest son of former Defense Minister Moshe Dayan, he both acted and starred in dozens of movies, both in Israel and in Hollywood, including 1976's Operation Thunderbolt and 1984's Beyond the Walls. By 2008 he had acted in some 50 films, and directed 16.

In 1998 Dayan received a lifetime achievement award from the Jerusalem International Film Festival. He was nominated for a Golden Bear award at the 43rd Berlin International Film Festival in 1993 and won an Honorable Mention. Dayan was named a member of the jury at the 49th Berlin International Film Festival in 1999.

Dayan was indicted on suspicion of drug use and beating his girlfriend in March 2009, for which he received a suspended sentence and 200 hours of community work as part of a plea bargain.
