Members of the Knesset’s Land of Israel lobby met at Migron on Monday, in order to show their support to residents who are under the threat of eviction from their homes.
Among those attending the event were MKs Ze'ev Elkin (Likud) and Aryeh Eldad (National Union), Yesha Council Chairman Danny Dayan, and residents of Migron and other communities.
At the start of the meeting, Elkin said, “We are holding the meeting of the Lobby here in Migron as a show of solidarity and in order to hold consultations on how to preserve the Jewish presence here after the land was purchased and has Jewish ownership.”
The Supreme Court ruled that the residents must leave their homes because the land on which they live is owned by a Palestinian Authority Arab. 17 of the residents, however, have appealed to the Court and asked that their expulsion from the community be cancelled. The residents purchased of most of the land, aided by an American philanthropist. The Court is set to discuss the appeal on Tuesday.
Dayan told Arutz Sheva that the residents of Migron plan to bring “heavyweight” evidence to the Supreme Court, which proves that they indeed purchased the land in question.
“If there’s objectivity,” he said, “the only sensible resolution is to let the people in those places that we bought to remain on the site. I hope that the deliberation tomorrow will be serious and objective.”
Meanwhile on Monday, residents of Migron whose land was not purchased and are to be evicted filed a request with the Supreme Court, asking that their eviction be postponed.
As part of an agreement negotiated between the residents and the government, the evicted residents agreed to move to a caravan site in nearby Givat HaYekev. However, the site is not yet completed and not suitable for living.
The request was filed after the Mateh Binyamin Regional Council submitted an opinion to the Supreme Court stating that the site is not yet ready for occupancy due to safety hazards which still remain on the site.
