The soaring Muslim population in Europe is working against the West. A British Lord – a Shi’ite Muslim and a native of Iran – censures the British stand on Iran’s nuclear development.

The defender of the Islamic Republic is none other than Professor Haleh Afshar of York University, one of the most rabid anti-Israeli institutions on the continent.

She argued that Britain and the United States have a “dual policy” of ignoring Israel’s alleged nuclear capabilities while making Iran’s nuclear program an international issue.

Regardless of whether either country has nuclear capability, Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has publicly threatened to “wipe Israel off the map.”

The official Iranian news agency IRNA reported that legislators from the Islamic Republic complained about the policy during a recent visit to Britain.

“Afshar reiterated that while the first step in non-proliferation must be the abolishment of nuclear arms, Israel openly issues [nuclear] threats and Pakistan, too, possesses atomic weapons.” stated the semi-official Fars News Agency.

“Britain will follow the same path as the Americans have adopted, namely the severance of banking ties with Iran or engaging in imposing sanctions on Iran's oil sector,” the Iranian born professor was quoted as saying.

Fars reported that she said Britain’s threats are empty because the country needs Iranian oil.

Iran earlier this week downgraded diplomatic relations with Britain from the ambassadorial level to a charge d’affaires.

Prof. Afshar is a life peer in the House of Lords and is a prominent Muslim feminist. She grew up in a wealthy family, and her father left Iran when she was a young child in the late 1940s.

She returned to the country after university and then left again after working as a journalist.

However, the professor apparently has no intentions of returning to Iran in light of previous criticism of Islamic attitudes towards women.
