Dozens of demonstrators blocked the entrance to the Knesset Monday to protest the difficulty in finding affordable housing.

The protesters placed cinderblocks on the small road leading into the Israeli parliament and connected them with mortar, building a low wall.

Police arrested five of the protesters. One of these was a woman who had brought the cinderblocks in her car. One policeman was hurt in clashes with the demonstrators and received treatment on the spot.

Physically blocking the entrance to the Knesset with cinderblocks would probably not have been possible for nationalist demonstrators, with whom police have a heavy hand. The housing demonstrators are largely middle-class liberal youths, and thus receive gentler treatment at the hands of police.
