All of the Syrians who broke through the fence along the Syrian-Israeli border have returned to Syria, according to sources in the Druze town of Majdal Shams, in the Golan Heights.

On the Lebanese border, meanwhile, thousands of protesters descended upon the border fence from Marun a-Ras. They tried to pass the fence but IDF troops stymied this attempt (see video).

The Syrian infiltrators left the central square of Majdal Shams after local residents persuaded them to do so. A short time later, they crossed the border back to Syria. Their return was coordinated with the Red Cross.

The IDF and police top brass in the north of Israel – including Northern Command head Maj.-Gen. Gadi Eizenkut and Police Northern Region commander Maj.-Gen. Zohar Dvir, were meeting in the early evening to assess the situation.

Hundreds of Syrians broke through the fence that separates Syria and Israel earlier in the day and determinedly marched to Majdal Shams, despite IDF fire that caused casualties among them. Israel did not expect this to happen, and IDF and police were not on hand in large enough numbers to handle the event optimally.

The IDF blamed Syria and Iran for the event.

Druze Israeli citizens in Majdal Shams told Voice of Israel government-run radio that they do not want the Syrians in their town but also would not allow the IDF to evacuate them. The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) agreed to evacuate them on condition that Israel is not involved.
