In a speech to the Knesset Wednesday, Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu hinted at covert intelligence Israel has regarding Hamas and Hizbullah assistance to Iran in its subjugation of dissent after recent elections there. The exposure of the brutality of the Iranian regime in the last two months, Netanyahu explained, is an event of far-reaching consequences for the Middle East.
Detailing the main points of his government's policies and positions at the request of 40 opposition Knesset members,
"One day, I will be able to say what else they sent over there at this time of subjugation."Netanyahu said that the greatest security challenge on the world stage today is the Iranian threat. However, he continued, "something occurred that is to my mind of great long-term significance, which is the exposure of the true face of the Iranian regime, a brutal regime, which oppresses the Iranian people."
Netanyahu emphasized that Israelis "have no conflict with the Iranian people, with whom we had close friendly relations." If the Iranian nation will "free itself of the yoke of tyranny," he said, "that would release forces of development, progress and peace in our region."
During this period of open suppression, the Prime Minister continued, "I paid attention to [the matter of] who supported this regime. Almost no one in the international community did, including in the Arab world, by the way. But there were exceptions.... A country called Syria and two movements, Hamas and Hizbullah, sent praises, encouragement and support. One day, I will be able to say what else they sent over there at this time of subjugation."
As previously reported by Israel National News, according to Iranian pro-democracy sources, thousands of Lebanese and Palestinian Authority Arabs have been hired and trained by the Iranian regime as violent street enforcers.
For Netanyahu, jihadist and Syrian support for Iran was a given: "Of course [this was so]! It is part of the same system, it's part of the same tyranny, it's part of the same hypocrisy - all of which is revealed when the mask is suddenly pulled off."
The Israeli Response
"Our policy initiative is to recruit an international anti-Iran front, to tighten sanctions on Iran, and to preserve the supreme security interests of the State of Israel," Prime Minister Netanyahu said.
"I believe there has been a slight toughening of the international and American stances against [the Iranian] regime. I think we must recognize the fact that they have not changed their intentions and plans," he continued. "We are in contact about this with the Obama administration and with the heads of the European states."
Netanyahu also revealed that the Obama Administration has "confirmed important strategic understandings" already reached between Israel and the United States.
A Closer Iranian Threat
Prime Minister Netanyahu also noted that "we face not only a distant Iranian threat, but also a closer one." The latter threat, he explained, was rocket fire by Hamas targeting Israel's southern cities.
In that regard, the Prime Minister said, his government's policy is to react immediately to any attack on Israeli cities. He rejected what he said was the previous Israeli policy of allowing an increasing escalation of rocket attacks until a massive military operation was inevitable.
"The new policy says that we are unwilling to accept rocket or missile fire on Israeli territory," Netanyahu declared. "For each and every rocket fired, there was a retaliation. And that was and will remain the policy of our government."
