AddReply(459487,"Let\'s get real","Paul S.","Toronto, Canada","07/03/09","There is an old Jewish joke that \nsays if you ask two Jews one \nquestion you will get three answers.\nWhenever I tell that line to a Jewish\naudience, I always get a laugh (at\nleast a smile).  When I tell that line\nto a Gentile audience I get a quizzical look.  Then I have to \nexplain it and by the time I\'ve got\nit explained the audience has gone\nto sleep.  Oh well.\nPoint being that Fishman harps on\naliyah as being the be-all and end-\nall of existence but is it?  I mean \nfrom Israel\'s point of view, not the\nindividual\'s.  Through Arutz Sheva\nI was introduced to the blog Samson Blinded by Obadiah Shoher (I know, it\'s not his real name.  Apparently his real identity \nis the worst-kept secret in Israel, but I digress).  Shoher describes\nhis analysis as \"Machiavellian\" \nwhich denotes a cynicism of a high\norder.  When it comes to aliyah \n(immigration to Israel), he states \nthat Israelis love aliyah but hate \nolim (new immigrants).  The reason\nis that Israel wants aliyah but not\nfrom anybody and everybody.  \nShe (Israel) does not want folks \nwho can\'t contribute in a meaningful\nway.  She doesn\'t want the elderly,\nshe doesn\'t want the sick, neither\nphysically nor mentally.  She doesn\'t want the dirt poor or the \nunskilled, nor surprisingly the very\nwealthy, because the latter need \ntoo much pampering.  This is Israel, not the French Riviera or \nthe Hamptons on Long Island.  \nIsrael certainly does not want Jews\nin the Diaspora to have their corpses sent to Israel for burial so\nto be closer to the ge\'ula (redemption).  Why?  Because this\ncosts in resources and she needs\nto be able to bury her own dead. \nSo who does Israel want?  Middle-\nclass families with some money\nbut not too much, with children but\nstill young enough to adapt to \nIsraeli life, where the breadwinners\nhave skills that are in demand in \nthe Israeli market (not everyone \npossesses such skills).  Such folks\nshould want to live in outlying areas\nthat need skilled people, not just \nsettle in big cities that are already\nwell-established and more olim \nwould be superfluous in them.  BUT, Israel cannot afford to be choosy.  She cannot turn away \nfolks who are old, poor, unskilled\nor (sigh) political dissidents (too \nlefty, for a start).  What to do?  \nFace reality, for one thing.  Unbridled aliyah sounds good, but\nit needs to be encouraged among \nthose that will help the country \ndevelop and quietly discourage \nthose whose presence would do \nlittle to help.  Who decides?  \nSmart people (not I, nor Fishman)\nwho know who (and what\'s) needed.\nI\'m sure Fishman wouldn\'t want lots\nof N. American secular Jews \ncoming to Israel bringing their \nculture and values with them.  He \nwants Jews who share his values \nand outlook.  Fair enough.  Sometimes quality is more important than quantity.  \nLet me just say this about Shoher.\nHe is the most cynical man I have\never read.  I doff my chapeau to his\ncynicism, which reaches heights I \ncan only hope to aspire to.  That\nbeing said, he recites truths that many fear to speak or write.  He \nshakes us out of our complacency\nand makes us think.  Do I want \neveryone to be like him?  No.  But\nmany could learn something from \nhim.  As for Fishman, I\'ve locked\nhorns with him before, but when he\nhas a point I will be fair enough to \nsay it.  Do we need aliyah?  Yes.\nDo we need \"quality\" aliyah?  Yes.\nShould he (or I) decide on who \ncomes and who doesn\'t?  No.  Let\nthe chips fall where they may.  In\ntime some \"dissidents\" will turn \naround and embrace the land, some\npoor (not all, sadly) will become \nprosperous and some elderly will\ncontribute in ways that are surprising.  Some wayward youth\nwill be forever delinquent and incorrigible, and the corpses from\nchu\"l (the Diaspora, for short) will\ncontinue to unload from the airport\nand the seaports.  We will bury \nthem, and grunt about it, but we\'ll do the right thing.  As David ben \nGurion once said (I\'m paraphrasing)\n\"when we have Jewish criminals\narrested by Jewish policemen, \nbrought before a Jewish magistrate\nand jailed in a jailhouse staffed with\nJewish guards and a Jewish warden, only then will we have a\ncountry\".   In the meantime, let\'s \ntry to get along, shall we?\n");

But what does this have to do with the fact that Halacha and true love for the Land both compel each and every true Jew in the Holy Land to drop everything this instant and to go forth to slay Amalek and his allies? When the Jewish People exercise sovereignty in the Land and the Jewish People are attacked in the Land, it is the individual obligation of every Jew to drop everything and go forth to milchemet mizvah, even the bride from her chuppah and the groom from his wedding chamber! \n\nSimilarly, according to Sharia, whenever the Umma is attacked within Dar al Islam, it is the obligation of every Moslem to drop everything and go forth to jihad.\n\nTell me, o mushroom, WHO fulfills their obligations?
