I refused to shake his hand so he asked if he could examine me. Of course I said yes and this perplexed him.  This was not a particularly intimate exam but the had to touch me to check certain things and make sure I didn\'t fall when he checked my balance.  He just couldn\'t get it but seemed to overlook it and a quirk. \nI was in a State that considers medical records to be the property of the Doctor not the patient. I couldn\'t get a copy of his report at first. This however was an exam related to an auto accident so after the case was settled my attorney sent me everything in my file to have here.  When I read this particular report, the doctor seemed rather scornful of my religious practice but noted that \"pt. DID permit me to examine her maintaining there was a difference in the touching\"  That innuendo will be there forever. If I had stayed in the States, it would imply to all future medical personnel that I have \"issues.\" It could possibly do the same here with a secular practitioner but a secular person cannot claim to be perplexed here, merely to disagree. \nOf course I don\'t have the issues he implied but  we have to be prepared to give a firm defense of our beliefs because if we chose to remain silent in the face of hostility, we may regret it the rest of our lives. AddReply(457946,"Strangely enough..","yvonne","cary","06/30/09","I agree with almost everythin Tzvi states here. However, in 2009 and beyond we live in a world with others who do not know about our customs. Some of the things mentioned yesterday make it impossible for men and women to work ide by side in healthcare, in labs, in offices, etc. So, what does one do then? One makes a personal investment in keeping the mind from straying. One can change oneself, it is impossible to change others. What does one do when confronted with evil personified, as was the case in the concentrationcamps? One calls in *help*, refers the situation out to G-d. That is also a way one keeps on course in modern life. *Check-in*, ask for guidance. It is a matter of the spirit. One is not going to pray out loud, or scream, protest, or otherwise behave unseemly. I compare this to playing my piano. I play classical music. If I would play jazz, and sometimes I do, the color of my tonal expression, the toucher changes. A professional musician must be careful with playing other styles. So far, during all these blogs the emphasis has been on the prohibitions, etc., but those are just first steps. At a certain level routine is part of the daily exercise, but it is not the essence. And, just as women have their obligations, so do men, and to not held them responsible for their thoughts, or even actions, is not rational. So, if a woman wlks around in a sunny dress in summer, that would be an offense to someone who is training his thoughts on the evils of the flesh and his own temptations. Better would it be to marvel at the beauty of G-d\'s creation, and the benefits exposure of the sun brings to the body. Another human being is not one\'s property, and one does not have jurisdiction over it. Free will and free choice makes it possible and necessary to decide what one will and will not see, or do. One can not chain one\'s children to the bedpost. If they go in another\'s home, one has no jurisdiction there. So, children should be instructed what to do, or not do, whether or not to enter another\'s home, etc. The control, again, is with onself. One does not delegate it to the other person. ");

And Rabbi Shmuel Eliahu is a leading rabbi of the religious zionist movement, not a Kabbalist, Haredi, or Hasid (while he probably incorporates the best elements of them all.)
