AddReply(344703,"#7 Tom re: 613 Commandments for Jews","Hilltop Savta","Israel","09/19/08","You asked, \"How many do the Orthodox really keep?\" We keep or try to keep every one that applies to us.  Tamar is right that the Jewish PEOPLE have 613 commandments, but not one Jew has all 613.  That is, there are commandments based on time; Shabbat laws are different than weekday laws, etc.; on place: laws only for Jews living in Israel,etc.  Laws for when there is a Temple.  Laws for Levites. Laws only for Kohanim (Priests).  Laws only for the Kohan HaGadol (High Priest).  Laws only for females of a certain age.  Laws only for males.  Laws only for adults. Laws for every Jew.  Laws forbidding one thing for most Jews and requiring that same thing for Priests. There is even a commandment to break commandments to save lives.\nSee.  It\'s really not so overwhelming.  In fact, I find it\'s usually pretty easy to keep the commandments that apply to me.  Everyone has a routine, a way of living and this is mine.  If I don\'t feel like doing a commandment, I do it anyway and think, \"This one\'s for You, God.\" And \"naner naner, evil inclination.  I am victorious once again.\" ; )\n\nWe bow down to no man, but we do serve God and we follow His laws because He said to.  We don\'t need to know the reason for them and often don\'t (But we want to and many spend their lives trying to find out). Those who are required to follow a certain commandment are no better than those who are not.  The laws give us self control; we try to think of the laws that may apply to our situation before we act.  In doing so, we bring HaShem into every moment of our lives. (Paper cut...finger in mouth? NO.  No blood eating.  Besides humans are not kosher :)  \n\nThere is no need to be jealous of other people\'s commandments.  Am I jealous because I can\'t be a Kohen?  Am I jealous because I don\'t have as many commandments as the men do?  (Heck) no.  \n\nEverybody on this earth has at least 7 commandments, each containing many sub-sections.   But do non-Jews have to deal with them all the time?  Do you  wake up and think, \"Today, I\'m not going to commit incest and I\'m not going to swallow any live goldfish\"?  \" Have courts of justice been established or do I have to do that today?\"  Well, I don\'t wake up and think \"I must not have squid for breakfast.\"  About 300 commandments apply to me as a Jewish woman in Israel, but on an average day I actively deal with about 4  and I heard for men, about 6.  Other ones are dealt with as the situation arises.  So, it\'s really not difficult to be a Torah observant person.  It\'s pretty exhilarating, really.");

G-d promised those that bless the Jewish people will be blessed and those that curse the Jewish people will be cursed.  And so has it been throughout history. Those countries that treated the Jews well prospered. Those countries that treated the Jews badly have been relegated to the ash heap of history or have become small insignificant countries. Look at Egypt, Spain, England, the Roman Empire, the Greek Empire, the Persian Empire,  and even Europe & Germany, that sanctioned/murdered 6,000,000 contributing members of society only to replace them 13 million impoverished, unfettered, unemployed, radical  moslems bent on their host country\'s destruction.. What poetic justice. If someone voices support for Jews, Israel, democracy or any other ideaoligy but Islam, or someone dares paint Islam in its true light they are slated for servitude or death. Look at the girls who were murdered because they did not want to marry old men, but men of their own chosing. They were shot and buried alive because of their \"crime\" with the full support of Moslem Ministers of State. Look at the women who were killed by their familiies for \"speaking\" to a man. Look at their threats, at their totalian religion. Look at their persecution and desicration of shrines holy to other religions when the terrirory is in their hands. Nothing is sacred to them. There is no freedom in Islam.. America should take heed. It is in the USA\'s best interests to support Israel not sell it down the drain by creating another terrorist state, that has no historical validity,  that hates America as much as it hates Israel, that will be used as a base from which to launch attacks on  American citizens.Hamas took over Gaza when the Jews were forcibly expelled. The world has tried to rid itself of the Jewish people, their greatest blessing, from \"time immemorial\" yet we continue to exist defying all logic. G-d promised that we would never be destroyed. G-d always keeps his promise. Tamar is right. Saying you are a Jew does not make you one. One can be a righteous gentile and does not have to become a Jew. If one really wants to be a Jew one has to know what it entails and promise to keep all the 613 commandments incumbant on a Jew. If a gentile finds that too difficult he can be a righteous gentile by keeping the 7 noahide laws and will be rewarded with a good life and paradise as well. Why isn\'t it the daughters instead (I\'m aware of Bat Tzion)?\n\n#27, your comments clearly point out that the \"Traditions\" contradict the Written Torah.  \n\nTamar, You corrected my post, with your \"opinion\" of the Talmud, not from written Torah, but simply from the Talmud itself.  Take \"Lo Bashamayim He\" (it is not in heaven)and the story of Rabbi Eliezar in the B Talmud into consideration.  These state that the Earth is under rule of the Rabbis and Even HaShem must obey THEM (Pesikta Rabbati 3).  How can these be true when Psalms 24:1 says this, \"The Earth is Hashem\'s and it\'s fullness, the inhabitated land and those who dwell in it.\"?  Clearly these two do not harmonize.  \n\nHashem gave 7 commandments concerning Shabbat.  The rabbis have added over a thousand to the original 7?!?!?  So when you say 613, you are really saying thousands.  \n\nThere are Two great commands in Torah, To Love HaShem, and to love your neighbor.  \n\nThe 10 Commandments are further detail into those first two.  \n\nThe rest of the 603 are even more detail.  They are clear.  They don\'t need more explanation.  \n\nI am told to rest on Shabbat.  I am told to Remember that Elohym created the heavens and the Earth, and rested from His creative work on the Shabbat day.  I am told to not make others work on that day.  I am told to not work on that day.  I am told to not kindle a fire (which an electrical spark is not a fire), probobly meaning that I am to not gossip, slander, start arguments, those kinds of fires on that day.  He tells me to keep that day holy.  However, He doesn\'t tell me that I am to light specific candles, of which there are pages and pages of regulations in Talmud devoted only to them.  He doesn\'t tell me that I can make a gentile work for me, even if he is in my home.  That is a contradiction to the 4th commandment spoken by the voice of G-d.\n\nIt seems that one would be SOOO burdened by the thousand plus commands added to Shabbat, that they would forget why they are keeping it in the first place.  To give glory, and honor to HaShem for His creative work, and love for us.  To spend that day in His rest, and focus on Him. \n\nIt becomes a VERY dangerous thing when the children think that the Father must obey them, instead of them obeying the Father.");

All other religions other than Hebrew/Jews are man given terms, each giving or adding to or differently approaching G-d in the manner of Men\'   Religion is man doing what he thinks is what G-d needs from him[man]--which is absolutely opposite of the One G-d of the Jew. 613 Commandments [not suggestions] 248 positive and 365 negative ones to be Obeyed!   I personally am not of any man made religion, not being a Jew, I have faith in G-d but am convienced that like some -who won\'t have a \'bloody\' religion\' but the Blood is where it\'s At!.  Blood atones, covers sin and eventually removes sin.  Have all the animals slain and sacrificed on altars been in vain? certainly not!  But they were looking to the only name in heaven or earth whereby we must place our final being to the glory of G-d for complete removal of our sin to stand purified before our creator G-d.  When a Jew accepts this fact and this person it doesn\'t make him any less a Jew--but opposite, he is a \'complete\' Jew and then is part of the soon coming kingdom of the Messiah.  You can be in your own conviction and still be wrong. Rabbi\'s differ in opinion, as preachers do.   My faith and trust is in the G-d of the Jewish people who has promised they will never be removed nor destroyed but only judged for their unbelief--which we All stand accountable!  I look to their teaching of the Torah but even the \'rest of the story\' in the testaments of Luke Peter and John, --Jews who instruct me to my righteousness.  We are accountable for idle words, but also let your yea be yea, and your nay be nay!   Thanks Tamar for allowing my words of appology.  Might Truth prevail\'  my only regret is I can\'t be a complete Jew, haha.");

One born of a Jewish mother is a Jew.  One converted is a Jew.\n\nFrom my perspective, the standard for conversion should be a good Orthodox rabbi.  Liberal rabbis will not do.\n\nAn Orthodox rabbi who is worth his salt will explain what the convert ultimately will be expected to observe and give up.  Things like Christmas and Easter will have to go, as will pork, lobster, etc.  The Sabbath will be observed.  \n\nThe rabbi will remind the potential convert, he or she can be a good human being by obeying certain fundamental moral laws, while at the same time, celebrating Christmas, Easter and eating pork.  \n\nHe or she does not have to join an historically despised and persecuted people to be a good human being.\n\nSome say this serves only to discourage the potential convert, but didn\'t Ruth\'s mother-in-law discourage Ruth and her sister?  \n\n\'And Naomi said to her two daughters-in-law, “Go, return each of you to her mother’s house. May the LORD deal kindly with you as you have dealt with the dead and with me.  “May the LORD grant that you may find rest, each in the house of her husband.” Then she kissed them, and they lifted up their voices and wept.  And they said to her, “No, but we will surely return with you to your people.” But Naomi said, “Return, my daughters. Why should you go with me? Have I yet sons in my womb, that they may be your husbands?....And they lifted up their voices and wept again; and Orpah kissed her mother-in-law, but Ruth clung to her. \n\nThen she said, “Behold, your sister-in-law has gone back to her people and her gods; return after your sister-in-law.”   But Ruth said, “Do not urge me to leave you or turn back from following you; for where you go, I will go, and where you lodge, I will lodge. Your people shall be my people, and your God, my God.  “Where you die, I will die, and there I will be buried. Thus may the LORD do to me, and worse, if anything but death parts you and me.” When she saw that she was determined to go with her, she said no more to her.\'\n\nRuth was a convert.   \n\nI know for a fact, if this route is taken -- with a good Orthodox rabbi -- more than likely the candidate will convert for the right reasons and not for wrong reasons like love and romance.");

This has been the goal of Amalek from the beginning (the forces of evil). What is mind boggling is that there are rabbis in Israel who go along with this.
