On one hand, it shows a disrespect for the religious element in the city for them to march in front of them in a spirit of defiance.  On the other hand, I feel that to ban the march sends the wrong message.  Are we not big enough to allow a few marginalized outsiders a chance to express themselves in a peaceful manner without our getting our shirts in a knot?  Let us not get self-righteous.  I am reminded that there are extremist elements among our own Jews who think Arutz Sheva is the devil\'s instrument.  Why?  Because you allow women\'s voices on the radio.  Some extremists believe that a woman\'s voice in public (i.e. over the airwaves) constitutes a breach of good order and therefore should not be allowed.  So before we feel all puffed up with righteousness in condemning the faigelehs (homosexuals), remember that there are some who would like to ban women from the media in Israel and turn the country into a kind of \"Jewish Taliban\".  What\'s next?  Fishman\'s dream comes true and we stand in front of every doorway measuring the length of every woman\'s skirt (no trousers allowed) and punish severely those who commit crimes against tzniut (the rules of modesty)?  Do you want to see that?  A kind of fashion-based Spanish Inquisition?  Can\'t happen, you say?  Really.  Always remember the words of Martin Niemoller (slightly abriged here): First they came for the Jews, but I didn\'t care, for I was not a Jew (he then mentions the same formula for several other groups he did not belong to), but when they came for me, there was no one left to speak up for me.\nBottom line:  Let a few faigelehs march (as long as they don\'t break the law), and you women of Arutz Sheva will still have jobs there in the future, for no one will be able to say that women don\'t belong on the air, and make it come to pass.\nThe price of freedom is sometimes to allow a few nuts a chance to see the light of day, so that you can still breathe free air.");

I\'ve given up trying to convince organizers that drag is a bore and useless.  The standard argument is that it shows defiance and pride.  Gay politicos seem unable to grasp the fact that one can be gay in different ways.  Frankly, it\'s part of the entertainment for the marchers, though, and something familiar to them.  If you hang out in a typical gay bar, you\'ll find that drag is typically the entertainment.  It\'s rarely done well, and is a big snooze.  The wet jockey shorts contests aren\'t much better. (I could be precise if I wanted to do the research.)  Rather, I\'ll focus on the big picture.  I have not consulted the one gay political contact I have in Israel because then I couldn\'t write freely here (he is a leftist).\n\nAbout four years ago, a Haredi counterdemonstrator stabbed a few gay participants at a Jerusalem pride march.  This apparently led to a decision to hold World Pride in Jerusalem the following year.  This march did not happen, but was resceduled for the next year, but it was then essentially replaced by an Israeli (as opposed to \"world\") march, which ended up in a stadium.  The reason for this move was nonstop Haredi rioting throughout Jerusalem.\n\nEvidently, there was an understanding with the police and Bolshevik elites that the stadium gathering in lieu of the march was a one-time affair, made necessary because the police were caught flat-footed.  The next year, there was a real march, but it was very poorly attended.  This year, the attendance increased substantially (3000 is not a bad turnout under the circumstances).\n\nTamar errs when she suggests that nobody was around.  Activists are primarily concerned with turning out the marchers, not with bystanders.  While police and elites lie to the settlerfolk, whom they do not respect in the slightest, they made good on their promise regarding the gay marchers.  JPost \"reports\" that there was an understanding between Haredi elites and the march organizers that there would be no riots this time.  While the Open House guy who referred to this seems to credit his organization and the Haredi elites, the bottom line was presumably that the police made clear that they would be bashing heads if there were riots.  The Haredi elites, who, like most politicos, are only concerned with their power, realized that it was better for them to pretend that they were trying to avoid \"contamination\" of their followers by directing them to avoid the march than to try something.  They would still get Jewish brownie points for their anti-gay position.\n\nSo, Tamar is wrong in thinking that this wasn\'t a real victory for the gay elites.\n\nTamar also omits other things, though.  Note that there was no partial nudity and nothing particularly outrageous.  This, I suppose, was part of the understanding as well.  Naturally, Tamar doesn\'t doesn\'t credit the march organizers for this.  She found one sign in Arabic, which is pretty sorry stuff compared to the usual pro-Fakestinian contingent.\n\nThere you are.  A \"modest\" gay pride march in the capital, carefully engineered among the major parties, backed by Bolshevik forces.\n\nAs the settlerfolk did not sign onto the Haredi rules, there was Federman and someone else who tried to counterdemonstrate, but they were promptly shut down.  The absence of a counterdemonstration of any size is presumably attributable to a secret Haredi-gay politico-police understanding.");
