When I first came to Israel and would travel from Tel Aviv to Rishon on the one road from the north to the desert (there was a sign in Rehovot at a gas station saying \"last chance for gas before the desert\") we would pass the maabarot.  Hundreds and hundreds of tents, each one containing one or more families.  \n\nSoon the tents (where people would wake up in the winter with their shoes floating around in the floods) were replaced with hundreds and hundreds of metal huts where one fried in the summer and froze in the winter.\n\nWe got 2 eggs a week on ration and one live fish (who lived in the bath tub till you killed it Thursday night for Shabbat dinner) and 1/4 of a lb. of meat every two weeks (40% of which had to be fat).  Veggies?  Well, if you grew them yourself.\n\nCompare that with what we have today.  where are those maabarot?  Replaced with white towers of luxurious flats.  Go into the shuk and see the shefa.\n\nWhere there had been no cars there are now two and three car families.\n\nSure my apartment is not the size of my 8 room, 3 bathroom and 3 car garage in Southern California but a lot less to clean.\n\nThere have always been those who have not returned when able to.....Egypt, Babylonia, Europe.  \n\nNot everyone can live here......good.  apartment prices are out of range now and getting higher daily.\n\nThere are some who really know where the good life is.");
