AddReply(422152,"Why is this night so different?","Gill Katz","Johannesburg","04/05/09","This week will see the Passover celebrated by Jews all over the world.\nI reflect on my family. And one Jew who will suffer alone in an underground cell.\n \n \nWhy is this night different to all other nights?\n \nThis year, my children and grandchildren will be at seder tables in Australia, United States and Israel, and whilst we are truly delighted to be spending  the seder with wonderful cousins, a part of me will be lost in Imagination Land. In my mind\'s eye I will see Avishai, Daniella, Yair and Aharon singing the Four Questions in their new home in Israel, together with their parents and paternal grandparents, and I will smile as I imagine  8 month old Grace~Rose as the newest member of the Australian family watching her siblings Mia and Shay do likewise in Perth. They will have their paternal grandparents there to share   the seder with,. In Florida,  in the United States, our son and his new wife Lori will be with her parents, brothers and grandmother, celebrating the Passover for the first time as a married couple.\nI am bereft at the thought of spending this Passover without my children and grandchildren. \nIt has caused me too,  to  feel the pain of  Gilad Shalit\'s family, who will also have an empty seat at their seder table. \nWhat will they be thinking? \nWhilst I know my family overseas are safe and happy, living their destinies, planning their futures, and living their dreams, somewhere in Gaza, Gilad Shalit will no doubt sit alone and try to recall his past, in an effort to cheer himself up. In his past, he had a life. He had a family. He  had friends and he too sang the Four Questions as a child at a seder. I cannot believe any longer that Gilad Shalt thinks about his future. Surely by now he has given up on anything that has to do with the days ahead.\nPicture if you will, a young man who was doing his army service in Israel, when suddenly out of a tunnel dug from Gaza, terrorists emerged.\n In an ensuing battle, he was injured, and taken away back down the tunnel, like  a rat, to an underground cell which would be his home for the next three years.\nI cannot  imagine Gilad\'s  being denied visits or even letters or parcels from his family.\nIt’s too cruel to  imagine.\nCan you imagine suffering as a  young Israeli for the wars taking place  between politicians and being used as an icon and forgotten as a human being?\nAt this time - that is what is consuming my mind.\nIf I held a seder this year at my home, there would be many empty seats.\nOne would be  for Gilad Shalit.\nAnd the question sung at this time, \"Why is this night different from all other nights?\" would take on a different meaning.\n The answer would be \n\"This year my children and grandchildren are free, but  Gilad Shalit remains a prisoner, as were the  Jews in Egypt before Moses led them to freedom\"\n \nGill Katz\n011 888 2088\n 2  Yaron Ave\n Victory Park 2195\n");

As we sing \'dayenu\' we start to realise that we didn\'t need the kindness before, yet we recieved it nevertheless. The day won\'t be far away where we will actually say thank you for the current exile too, may it still be this year");
