Winston, but this is the first time that I have heard of the mighty Merkava MBT being replaced in production & service.\nWhen did this replacement proposal first come about?\nEven more so I find it amazing after all the tank combat experience that Israel has been through, and hence it’s ‘purpose’ study, design and building of the Merkava, that the Israeli Army would seriously consider replacing it with the likes of the American M1 or the Future Combat System. \nHell I have been amazed as to why (apart from the obvious political and religious bias) after all these years that the Merkava MBT has never been exported/purchased by foreign armies.\nI have always been envious (as an Australian!) as to Israel’s ability and want to purpose build its military equipment to suit its own unique needs and requirements!\n\nP.S and as to Steve Andrews of California comments ‘Prove Your Statements’, \nIn all due respect the M1A1/M1A2  in Iraq has not faired well against the latest Russian supplied ATGW’s which has been a shock to the U.S and the U.S Army.\nAlso the operational tempo and use in numbers of Merkava MBT in the Israeli offensive of 2006 Lebanon War and Israeli conflict was far different to that of what the Americans are experiencing in Iraq.\n\nLong live the attributes and combat proven capability of the Merkava MBT series\n\n\nRegards\nPioneer\n");

More likely a tactical/strategic exercise in which outstanding local Israeli commanders did well tactically against foreign US commanders in unfamiliar terrain.\n\nJust look at the recent 2006 Lebanon War and Israeli published records showing 52 Merkava tanks damaged, 22 penetrated, 5 destroyed.  All this in just 34 days. And all by ATGM fire.  Just imagine then what modern kinetic energy main gun rounds would do to the Merkava.\n\nContrast that to the M1A1/A2 proven performance in both Desert Storm AND Iraq today, after 4 years of continuous combat.  Oh, by the way, this is in a DUSTY, DESERT ENVIRONMENT.");
