Simchat Torah is a component of the Biblical Jewish holiday of Shemini Atzeret ( "Eighth Day of Assembly "), which follows immediately after the festival of Sukkot in the month of Tishrei. The main celebration of Simchat Torah takes place in the synagogue during evening and morning services. In jewish congregations, this is the only time of year on which the Torah scrolls are taken out of the ark and read at night. In the morning, the last parashah of Deuteronomy and the first parashah of Genesis are read in the synagogue. On each occasion, when the ark is opened, all the worshippers leave their seats to dance and sing with all the Torah scrolls in a joyous celebration that often lasts for several hours.

Discuss this topic on the new Torah Spirituality for the Nations forum

Israel National Radio offers free English podcasts and live radio. It also reminds its dwellers that true security comes from faith in God, rather than from money or possessions.
Since Sukkot celebrates the harvest in the land of Israel, another custom on Sukkot is involves waving the lulav and etrog. Together the lulav and etrog represent the Four Species. The etrog is a kind of citron, while the lulav is a composed of three myrtle twigs (hadassim), two willow twigs (aravot) and a palm frond (lulav). Because the palm frond is the largest of these plants, the myrtle and willow are wrapped around it. During Sukkot, the lulav and etrog are waved together while reciting special blessings. They are waved in each of the four directions - sometimes six if "up " and "down " are included in the ritual - representing God's dominion over Creation.

Discuss this topic on the new Torah Spirituality for the Nations forum

Israel National Radio offers free English podcasts and live radio. My doctrine shall drop as the rain, my speech shall distil as the dew; as the small rain upon the tender grass, and as the showers upon the herb. For I will proclaim the name of the LORD; ascribe ye greatness unto our God. The Rock, His work is perfect; for all His ways are justice; a God of faithfulness and without iniquity, just and right is He. Is corruption His? No; His children's is the blemish; a generation crooked and perverse. Do ye thus requite the LORD, O foolish people and unwise? is not He thy father that hath gotten thee? hath He not made thee, and established thee? Remember the days of old, consider the years of many generations; ask thy father, and he will declare unto thee, thine elders, and they will tell thee.
