What is Tzedaka and Who did Avraham Learn it From?

Avraham takes up the sword to redeem his brother-in-law Lot, and flat-out refuses to materially profit from the war in any way. He meets with Melchitzedek, (otherwise known as Shem, the son of Noach), the high priest of the L-rd on High, in the city of Shalem, later know as Jerusalem, and the lineage of the high priest is passed on the Avraham. Join Rabbi Chaim Richman and Yitzchak Reuven as they examine all these issues, as well as G-d's final test for Avraham: the binding of Yitzchak on Mount Moriah.

The Temple Mount Today: From Rambam to Riots: A Definitely Must Watch Video!

843 years ago the Rambam, (Maimonides) ascended the Temple Mount in Jerusalem, where he offered up prayer to the Creator of the Universe. Today, the mere mention of Jewish prayer on the Temple Mount causes the Moslems clerics to incite their followers to violence, igniting the Temple Mount.

Ascending the Temple Mount and showing reverence to to G-d in the place of His Holy Temple, is a positive commandment expressed in the Torah. Known in Hebrew as “mora haMikdash” this commandment is as applicable today as was in the Rambam’s day.

No amount of violence and naysaying can sever the eternal bond between the nation of Israel and the place G-d chose for His Holy House. Two thousand years of unbroken tradition have preserved the precise knowledge of the location of the Holy Temple, and the adjacent areas permissible to enter.

The Rambam possessed this knowledge. So do we.

Only one way exists today to preserve and strengthen our bond to the place of the Holy Temple: to ascend and to pray, as the Rambam did. Doing so will not create turmoil, but tranquility; not war, but peace.

6 MarCheshvan: Celebrating Maimonides Ascent to the Temple Mount - Part 1

We’ve now begun the month of MarCheshvan, the “bitter” month of Cheshvan, ostensibly the most drab, lackluster month on the Hebrew calendar… no festivals or major observances. However, an enigmatic Midrashic teaching reveals that below the surface, in the realm of potential, this month is “on hold,” promised by G-d Himself to be host in the future to the most exciting event of all time… the dedication ceremony of the Third Temple. Rabbi Richman and Yitzchak Reuven explore this fascinating tradition and emphatically conclude that if it’s up to us, in our generation, the future is now! We need to make it happen. Indeed, this theme converges from all directions in this week’s edition of Temple Talk, for this is also the month in which we begin asking for rain in our prayers in the Land of Israel, and it’s also the month in which the waters of the Great Flood in the time of Noah began to fall.

Noah was a truly righteous man who was instrumental in saving the entire world, and today, his righteous descendants are also doing their part to save the world. But: What would you do if you could pray for the world, and you knew that your prayer could save the entire world? This is the question we ponder on the backdrop of this week’s Torah portion.

Also: It was this on the sixth day of this very month, in the year 4926 (1165), that the great Rambam (Maimonides) ascended the Temple Mount! Last week's Torah portion of Ki Tavo includes a section known as "the Admonition," including some chilling "curses" that will be visited upon the Children of Israel if they do not heed G-d's instructions. But our hosts discover that these "curses" are nothing but blessings in disguise, waiting to be realized in their full potential for goodness... and ironically, it is we ourselves who garb these G-dly blessings in a raiment of negativity.

As ever, Yitzchak Reuven and Rabbi Richman find that the bottom line is our level of personal responsibility. Last week's haftorah (prophetic reading) from the book of Isaiah takes this principle even further and demonstrates that ultimately, even the End of Days is up to us to bring about earlier than its preordained default time. Tune in for details!

Our hosts also share some exciting Temple Institute news and updates and offer a review of the Temple-related accomplishments and achievements for the outgoing year of 5769.

Tie a Ribbon of Acknowledgement Around the First Fruit Tree! This week's Torah portion of Ki Tavo (Deut. 26:1) begins with the word V'haya, an expression indicating joy. And there's no experience of joy as great as bringing the first fruits of the Land of Israel to the Holy Temple! The concept of the first fruits is an extraordinary lesson in the dynamics of the human condition, and as our hosts learn, bringing the first fruits represents a dimension of our relationship with G-d that applies to all of us throughout our lives. It's all about humility, and the ability to put ourselves aside and acknowledge G-d's presence and kindness.

Indeed, it would seem that the commandment of coming into the Land and bringing the first fruits to the Holy Temple makes this parsha an especially happy one!

But take heed: this Torah portion also features the severe admonitions (curses) which transpire when the people of Israel do not follow the Torah... but wait, this section also begins with the word V'haya, indicating joy! What's the deal? Is this not a great contradiction? Our hosts solve this mystery!

Yitzchak Reuven and Rabbi Richman also study the disease of forgetfulness and the sorry state of affairs in which masses of humanity veritably sleepwalk their lives away. Our hosts declare: Somnambulism stops here! Time to wake up! How can this waste of life be avoided? A perfect lesson for our month of Elul and preparation for the Days of Awe.

What is the secret of the mysterious captive "Woman of Beautiful Form" that we read about in Parshat Ki Tetzei (Deut. 21:11)? Is this just a license for licentiousness, or is there something much deeper and even holy going on here? Tune into this week's "Temple Talk" as Yitzchak Reuven and Rabbi Richman explore the world of the Jewish solider, who fights for the G-d of Israel, His people and His land. This soldier has special merit, and G-d can grant him spiritual power and insight. The Israeli soldier represents the highest level of morality, but the world looks at him with hypocrisy. Rabbi Richman takes this to a personal place as he acknowledges G-d's goodness in a miracle involving one of his sons in the IDF this past week. The Torah's teaching of the "Woman of Beautiful Form" is also an allusion to the concept of soul-mates, and to the Shechina...

Yitzchak Reuven cites an enigmatic Midrashic teaching that depicts King David being lifted into Heaven on the back of a large, horned beast. "If You let me down safely," David declares to G-d, "I will build the Holy Temple." Yitzchak and Rabbi Richman explore the meaning of this teaching, and discover what it was that King David was after... a way of serving G-d in this world while standing on solid ground. Indeed, that's the secret of the Holy Temple. But today, much to our chagrin, a trip to the site of the Holy Temple can leave one feeling quite unstable... especially if you're Jewish. The anti-Jewish discrimination employed by the Israeli police is quite well-known. But what happens when non-Jewish visitors, in this case Righteous Gentiles, are accused by the Israeli police of being Jewish? As if that is a crime!
