An interview with Micha Feldmann, author of On the Wings of Eagels: The Secret Operation of the Ethiopian Exodus.
Today’s packed programme features the story of the genuine yearning of the Ethiopian Jews to come home and join their people in the Jewish homeland - and how they paid a heavy price of lost lives by leaving their villages and sometime trekked for weeks across mountains by night, with only hand luggage, to reach refugee camps in the Sudan, knowing that only from there will they have a chance to reach Israel.
This is the story of how Ethiopian mass immigration to Israel was made possible, sometimes clandestine, at other times by bribes, told by a man who was heavily involved in their rescue.
It’s a lesson for Jews in the ‘first world’, who only need to hop on a plane and who can still ship all their possessions when making Aliyah, when coming to live in the land of their ancestors.
Also: My thoughts about Obama’s mysterious visit to Israel.
And: The strange events surrounding the formation of our new government; the behaviour of the ultra orthodox parties and the extraordinary affair our former Foreign Minister who is indicted for fraud, yet wants his job back.
Also: Some Passover matters.
