History records (rightly or wrongly) that the Etzel and Lehi Jewish freedom fighter organizations, attacked the Arab village of Deir Yassin (today's Givat Shaul neighborhood in Jerusalem) and perpetrated a massacre of Arabs there. The village of Deir Yassin was crucial to capture and bring under Israeli rule because of its overlooking the only road to Jerusalem, where Jewish convoys bringing food and medical aid to Jerusalemites were constantly cut down from deadly attacks and confiscation of the needed aid.
Milstein describes the intent of the Israeli Left wing and the Arabs in promulgating this story. Each wanted to further their separate goals. The Left, in order to dis-credit the Etzel and Lehi and label them criminal right wing extremists who could not be trusted to join the new Israeli government under David Ben Gurion, and the Arabs, to cry 'foul' to the world, slander the Jews claiming rape and other atrocities, and incite other Arabs to battle the Jews - however, their Arab cries backfired, and instead of inciting more Arab villages to battle the Jews, it instilled fear in them, and tens of thousands of Arabs fled Israel to places like Jordan and Lebanon.
