Right now Greece is in great economic turmoil affecting all sectors of her people and the Jewish community as a whole and individually is no exception. So Walter went to Athens with the microphone of Walter’s World to find out how this financial crisis is affecting the Jews living as our relatively near neighbours.
This programme and the next will examine in some detail the history of Greek Jews, their life today, the difficulties they face in light of the rise of neo Nazi representation in their Parliament and on the streets - and how the Jewish youth see their future. The programme will also visit the excellent Jewish Museum of Athens and talk with the Rabbi who runs the Chabad house and its wonderful Kosher meat restaurant. We begin this week with a general overview of the community, hear some surprising information and visit some important Jewish sites. My guest and guide is Benjamin Albalas, President of the Jewish Community of Athens, Greece.
