How can we effectively protect our children from abuse?

.Abuse of children is a terrible phenomenon that often occurs from within; i.e from people whom we and our children may know and trust.
Questions addressed include;
--Who are the perpetrators of this crime?
--What are the negative effects that abused children suffer
with--often long into adulthood? ------How can we protect our
children from becoming victims?
--What are essential points that every parent needs to convey to their
children on this topic in an age appropriate fashion?
--What are warning signs and red flags that abuse might have or be occuring?

A word of caution: Not everyone on the list is necessarily what would be considered a dangerous pedophile/child molester. An 18 year old having consensual relations with a 17 year old in some states can be tried and convicted of rape and have his name placed on an official list and remain there years later. So if you find your 'neighbor' on this list, be vigilant but recognize that not all crimes that make the list are 'equal'. Also, please note that certain Israeli sites are unofficial and has been created privately. It not only includes convicted molesters, but also those who are merely suspected.
