According to
Israeli Minister Without Portfolio Benny Begin, the fact that the
Arabs commemorate the establishment of the State of Israel, which
happened in May 1948, as a “Nakba” (calamity) and do not riot
during June, the month in which Israel reclaimed sovereignty over
Judea, Samaria, and Jerusalem, etc. in 1967 (which anti-Israel
propagandists have dubbed the beginning of the “occupation”),
proves that they are unwilling to accept a Jewish presence in any
part of the Land of Israel. Begin told Israel National
Radio’s Josh Hasten that over the last several months
the PLO, led by Fatah Party head Mahmoud Abbas, has emphatically
shown that the Arabs living in Judea, Samaria, and Gaza are not
interested in peace, but rather seek to destroy Israel in stages.
Begin cited the “unity treaty” between Fatah and the radical Islamic terror organization Hamas as the first proof that peace is not on the horizon. He also said that this year’s “Nakba” (calamity) unrest throughout Israel on May 15, which saw the infiltration of Northern Israel by over 100 Syrian radicals, along with riots throughout Judea and Samaria demonstrates the Arabs true intentions.
Begin also said that despite the recent trend of even right-wing politicians accepting the notion of the establishment of a “Palestinian State,” he remains against the formation of such an entity. While admitting that unfortunately his thoughts are from the “old school”, he said that “another sovereign entity established west of the Jordan River [especially a PLO/Hamas State] would contradict the rights of the Jews to our homeland.” Begin added that “our homeland [Israel] doesn’t stop east of the 1949 armistice lines,” and that there is “no historical significance whatsoever” to what is known as “the Green Line.” He concluded his comments on the matter by stating emphatically that “Judea and Samaria is the cradle of our [the Jewish people’s] history.” And furthermore, maintaining control of the Judea/Samaria highlands is an important “issue of national security,” thus relevant to the safety of all Israelis.
In regards to Israel’s hasbra efforts, Begin said that Israel starts at a disadvantage since the Arabs in the region put a vastly greater amount of funds towards their public relations campaigns. Nevertheless Begin said that it the responsibility of the Israeli government along with private individuals who care about Israel to get out the truth. “We don’t have to sell lies,” he added. “Once they [the people of the world] have the facts, they can morally judge” and realize that we are a just nation.
