Safed-Tzfat - a unique old city, oft ignored, and crumbling. The 8th Israel Antiquities Authority Northern Region Archaeological Conference was held here last week. Field archaeologist Yossi Stepansky shares the discoveries, vision, and new impetus this conference has galvanized. The 500 year-old tombstones coming to light, Mameluke period mansions, Crusader fortress restoration, the true underground nature of the city and the thereat of earthquakes, are just some of the issues explored over three segments.
Yossi recommends: If you want to have a share and get your hands dirty in the development of Ancient Tzfat, excavation, conservation, and more, contact Aharon Botzer at Livnot U'lehibanot. Yossi himself recently authored a colorful historical book on the Ari Ashkenazi Synagogue, available there now in Hebrew, and set to be published in English this summer.
