Coins in history and archaeology, and Jewish views of charity are our topics as the annual half shekel Temple contribution will be proclaimed in synagogues throughout the world this week. More and more, Yoav Farhi of the Hebrew University is called upon to search for and identify coins at archaeological excavations throughout the country. Later this month he will speak on the new finds from the Persian period at Elah Fortress-Khirbet Qeiyafa. As Yoav is the very last person to receive a degree from the great master Yaakov Meshorer of blessed memory we discuss this giant's contribution to our understanding of history, and analyze his half-shekel theory. Ancient techniques of manufacture, the role of coins, and what little bits of metal teach us make for a profitable discussion.
