Scholars and archaeologists Guy Stiebel, Zev Weiss, Yakob Kalman, and Yisrael Levine share their personal sense of the man and the legacy of Prof Ehud Netzer, who was killed in a work accident last week at Herodion, as he was planning the next excavation season.

Ehud's colleagues and students explain how he shaped each excavation to be developed so they would ultimately share their message effectively with the public; e.g. Masada. He revised the academic understanding developed from text alone of Herod the political leader and person through his excavations which followed Herod across the country. As an architect himself he understood Herod and could literally reconstruct his work. Prof Netzer fulfilled his dream if finding Herod's tomb, trusting in Josephus when others doubted. He was the premiere scholar of Herod, opened Herod's sites to the world, and changed our understanding.

Yet when you hear how he treated his associates and their families, so much so that one is sitting the shiva mourning period as a family member- you will be touched by this great and humble's man's humanity. May his memory be a blessing, and may Devorah and his family comforted amongst the mourners of Zion and Jerusalem.<
