One of the most basic tenets of our Emunah system is that HASHEM orchestrates every action. There is no happenstance, nothing just occurs; all activities under the sun are directed by HASHEM. Success or failure, health or sickness, a long life or a short life, are all defined by HASHEM's decree. If so, why should I work hard? If I get sick, why should I go to the doctor? In fact, why should I make any effort, HASHEM will bring about what he wants anyway? This Shmuz helps us focus on our role, and HASHEM's role, and ultimately allows us to find the balance for the correct relationship between effort and Bitachon.
