Residents of the Shiloh area in Samaria blocked traffic Wednesday night on the main highway from Jerusalem to Shechem (Route 60) following a terrorist's attempt to kidnap a Jewish mother and her baby. The demonstration gathered at the Luban a-Sharkiyeh junction, to protest the attack and the general deterioration in security experienced by residents of the Binyamin region of Samaria.

A terrorist disguised as a yeshiva student attacked a female driver and attempted to hijack her car with a baby inside, earlier in the day. The incident occurred near the northern entrance to Maaleh Levonah, near Eli in southern Samaria, shortly after noon.

Approaching the intersection, the young mother-driver noticed what she thought was a yeshiva student waiting for a ride, Wearing a yarmulke and backpack, he looked no different than dozens of others whose primary mode of transportation around Judea and Samaria is “tremping” (hitch-hiking).

When she pulled up to him, however, she realized her mistake. The terrorist opened the door wildly, sprayed tear gas in her face, and then made his way over to the driver’s side. Although she could barely see, she turned off the engine and quickly tried to get her daughter out of the back seat. The terrorist then tried to drive off, but was unable to do so because he did not know the electronic code. Seeing that his plot was foiled, he quickly ran off.

Contrary to other media reports, the mother - and not the terrorist - tried to remove the baby from the car before driving off. Emergency police and army forces quickly arrived on the scene and tried to locate the terrorist.

Four years ago, in the same area, two armed Arabs drove past two ninth-grade girls waiting for a ride and attempted to abduct them. One of the girls was able to escape, watching helplessly as the Arabs tried to force her friend into their car – until, just moments later, a car carrying an IDF officer happened along, causing the kidnappers to abandon their effort. They tried to escape, but were arrested at a checkpoint a few kilometers away.
