This will be the first time the crossing has opened for a two-day period since Egypt received responsibility for the security of the Philadelphia Route. Israel has agreed to the opening so that Arabs who traveled to Mecca in Saudi Arabia for Ramadan can return to their homes in the Gaza Strip via Egypt. However, it has asked for a list of names of all Gaza residents who will pass through the crossing.

The security services have checked all of the names and only those residents who receive official clearance from Defense Minister Shaul Mofaz will be allowed to pass through.

Security sources have estimated that around 6,000 Arabs will go through the crossing over the next two days.
