The policemen had been trying to stop an Arab car thief from escaping through the Tunnel Highway between Jerusalem and Gush Etzion. When they tried to arrest the suspect, he pulled out a knife and stabbed both of them. One of the officers managed to shoot the thief in the leg, however, before he could get away.

One of the officers was moderately wounded, while the other sustained light injuries. Both were taken to Hadassah University Hospital at Ein Karem in Jerusalem.
