Proposed Bill: No More Unsolicited Ads

The Knesset will vote today on a rough-draft proposal to restrict the sending of any type of junk mail - including faxes and SMS messages.

The proposal, formulated in conjunction with the Consumers Council, states that every consumer can sign up in a Justice Ministry registry, and thus make it known that he refuses to receive any form of junk mail from any advertiser. This includes faxes, email, cell phone text messages, and others.

An advertiser who sends an unsolicited announcement to someone on this registry will be liable, according to the proposed bill, to compensate the recipient a sum of 1,290 shekels for each ad sent.
