Avner Shimoni, head of the Gaza Coast Regional Council, proposes that residents rip up the letter they are scheduled to receive in a few days from the Disengagement Evacuation Authority. "Just as then-Ambassador to the UN Chaim Herzog ripped up, on the UN podium, the resolution likening Zionism to racism, that's what we must do as well to the letters we are about to receive."

Yonatan Bassi, head of the Evacuation Authority that is charged with paying compensation to citizens slated for expulsion and finding them alternative housing, has already written the rough draft of his initial letter to the residents, explaining to them how they may contact his office. The letter also outlines their legal rights, and asks them not to make the uprooting more difficult than it already is by unduly protesting.

The letter will apparently be mailed on Wednesday. Sources in the Evacuation Authority say the letter is "directed to the residents' souls, not their pockets."

The letter and the offer of compensation is seen by Gush Katif leaders as an attempt to "bribe" the residents. "We don't want them to expel us nor to bribe us," Shimoni said, adding that the Evacuation Authority should be dismantled.

Herzog made the dramatic gesture of ripping up the about-to-be-approved "Zionism is Racism" UN resolution on Nov. 10, 1975 - the 37th anniversary of Kristallnacht in Nazi Germany.
