IDF naval commando St.-Sgt. Erez Ashkenazi, 21, from Kibbutz Reshafim, was killed in an offensive to head off a major terrorist attack early Friday morning, near the community of Netzarim. Four terrorists were killed in the battle, which occurred at about 5 AM. The Israeli forces circled a home housing the terrorists, who were planning a major terror attack that very day along the Karni-Netzarim route, and Ashkenazi was gravely wounded by a bomb. He died of his injuries a short time later. Erez was buried early this evening in Reshafim, between Beit She'an and Kibbutz Maaleh Gilboa in the northern Jordan Valley.

The IDF reports that since September 2000, over 140 Kassam rockets have been launched at Jewish targets, mainly in the Negev, from the Gaza Strip area. There are conflicting reports regarding the number of mortar shells fired at Jewish targets in the Negev and Gush Katif, ranging between 1,700 and 2,700.
