He beat the Dutch champion, Elco van der Geest, in 69 seconds, despite suffering from a back injury that interfered with his training. According to a story on the victory in Haaretz newspaper, “dozens of children sprang forward to ask for the Israeli judoka's autograph.” Another Israeli judo artist, Udi Wax, competing in the under-60 kg. weight class, finished in fifth place. Yoav Rezbozov took seventh in the under-73 kg. class. The Israeli team came in fifth in the men’s team competition and eleventh overall, after having not participated in the team event since 1974, reports Haaretz.
