An op-ed in the al-Wafd newspaper in Egypt had this to say about America: “America is now exposed to the naked eye as an ugly, demonic power; its officials as confused drunkards....”

The occasion for this characterization was, of course, the US-led war against the Iraqi regime. The columnist, Essam Kamel, writes that “A major outcome of the ongoing war in Iraq is that it has proved the falsehood, once and for all, of America's advocacy of a free media and of democracy.” According to Kamel, “America's democracy has been proven false. The Bush Administration now stands on a par with Third World regimes accused of non-transparency.”

Why is that? The Egyptian newspaper article explains: “Washington has even ventured to arrest hundreds of war opponents in the US itself.... They have also expelled dozens of reporters, on the mere charge of attempting to give the facts about the painful reality of British and American soldiers and of Baghdad after relentless Coalition bombardments.”

To squelch the truth, the al-Wafd column implies, America is attempting to silence Iraqi propaganda: “The Americans, irritated by the press conferences of Iraq's Said al-Sahaf, have concentrated their pounding force against the Ministry of Information.”

The American anti-democratic moves are so egregious, Kamel explains, that “Americans are now seeking the assistance of the Arab media in the attempt to misinform the American public.”
