Oneil Cruz, a 21-year-old Pittsburgh Pirates prospect, faced a hearing in the Dominican Republic where he hails from. The hearing came after Cruz was involved in a fatal car accident that claimed three lives.

Early on Monday morning, 21 September, Cruz’ Jeep Cherokee collided with a motorcycle carrying three passengers. All three of them died while he managed to walk away uninjured.

The victims’ names were Deby Beato (20), Jons Sabab (23) and Daniela Pérez (19).

According to reports, the sportsman was taken into police custody after the accident.

Cruz had been driving down Sanchez Highway in Baní and was heading east at around 1 am. The motorcycle was going in the same direction and was in front of him. However, it is believed that the bike’s lights were not turned on and Cruz drove into it from behind.

Currently, the Dominican Republic has a strict curfew that prohibits being outside between 8 pm and 5 am during weekdays.

Cruz was scheduled to have a virtual hearing before the Special Traffic Court of the Peace of the Peravia province on 23 September.

The hearing was postponed until 25 September to allow lawyers enough time to prepare their legal arguments.

The court will have to determine if Cruz should be indicted for the tragic accident. If he is indicted and convicted, the young man can receive three years to five in prison.

As a result, three months of preventative prison during the investigation has been requested by authorities.

It is claimed that Cruz was in the habit of driving very fast in the streets of Baní.

Of course, Cruz is not the only baseball player or young man to drink during times away from work.

With DR's heavy cultural ties to drinking, perhaps the major league should consider giving hangover pills like Rallymate to players. They help flush out toxins that cause heavy hangovers before the 'rush' hits the brain.

Many baseball (and other sports) stars are guilty of drinking heavily when they get time off from playing.

Since they’re only human, they also suffer hangovers the day after a night of fun and drunken adventures.

Here are some ideas that could help prevent alcohol-related issues with these young Dominican baseball talents.

Hangover Remedies

There are many ways to fight off a hangover after a long night of drinking. Some of them are meant to be quick fixes and others are more long-term.

Short-term Hangover Cures

Eat lots of carbohydrates, salty foods, bananas or eggs. These foods will restore the balance in your body and get you feeling better.

Staying hydrated is highly recommended as well since alcohol dehydrates your body. Consider drinking lots of water and sports drinks.

Taking supplements such as Korean pear, prickly pear and ginseng are also believed to be a good way to cure hangovers.

Dutch extreme athlete Wim Hoff, also known as The Iceman, is passionate about teaching people to be healthier.

He has a different view on how to be healthy though - freezing temperatures. Wim, who was able to scale Mount Kilimanjaro in his shorts, recommends a cold shower to keep the doctor away.

Hof’s hangover remedy has to do with the right kind of breathing and a very cold shower to get the blood pumping.

No hangover pills are necessary when doing what The Iceman suggests, apparently.

Wim believes that frequent cold exposure and meditation can make anyone a lot healthier without medication.

However, his suggestions are not to be jumped into without training and proper preparation. Wim offers guidance on Facebook and with a free app and podcast.
