A police officer was set on fire by a protester during demonstrations over the death of a man in police custody in Mexico.

According to The Telegraph. the incident took place during protests in the city of Guadalajara, in the state of Jalisco, as locals gathered to ask for justice in the case of Giovanni Lopez, 30, who died after his arrest.

Lopez, a construction worker, had been arrested on May 4 for not wearing a mask. According to the Mexico News Daily, he was allegedly beaten and tortured by municipal police, and died in a hospital on May 5 after suffering a traumatic brain injury.

Journalist Mario Marlo filmed officers in helmets confronting protesters. When one of the officers got onto his motorbike, a protester ran up behind him and poured flammable liquid onto the officer, and set him on fire.

The Telegraph reported that the Governor of Jalisco, Enrique Alfaro, confirmed that the burnt officer and five other officers were injured in the protest, and that 26 people were arrested. He added that three patrol cars were also burned.
