Defense Minister Benny Gantz (Blue and White) said that over the holiday weekend, the government carried out thorough assessments and discussions regarding the resurgence of coronavirus infections in the country.

Gantz said Israel was entering an extended "coronavirus routine" and that locals would need to continue following health protection instructions to allow the economy to make a comeback and ensure others stayed healthy.

Gantz said a number of new measures had been undertaken:

  • Coronavirus health protection enforcement - "coronavirus commando": The State will operate in a coordinated and timely manner whenever a rise in infections is suspected. Preventive steps will include testing, closing down of shops and businesses ignoring guidelines, monitoring infections, and isolation orders.
  • Information campaign: intensified public information campaign and use of the education system for transmitting instructions to the general public.
  • Enforcement: In the coming days, the State will increase enforcement. In order for recreational facilities, shops, and businesses to remain open, guidelines must be followed.

Gantz also said the Ministry of Defense is preparing for a scenario in which "coronavirus hotels" would need to accommodate additional patients, as well as a possible rise in virus testing.

Gantz, who also serves as the Alternate Prime Minister, appealed to Israel's citizens to take responsibility for themselves as well as the entire country by conforming to Health Ministry guidelines and taking all available precautions to prevent the spread of the virus.
