A one-year-old infant was severely injured when a fire broke out in his Jerusalem apartment on Saturday afternoon.

The infant was transferred to Jerusalem's Hadassah Ein Kerem Medical Center with burns on his body.

At 3:16p.m., Magen David Adom (MDA) received reports of a fire in an apartment on Shimon Mu'alam Nissim Street in Jerusalem. MDA paramedics arriving at the scene provided first aid to the infant and transferred his to Hadassah Ein Kerem suffering smoke inhalation and burns to his upper body.

Senior MDA paramedic Tamir Sharon said: "When we arrived at the scene, we saw smoke rising from the apartment. The civilians who were at the scene told us that the toddler had been evacuated from the apartment which had gone up in flames."

"He suffered from burns to his upper body and from smoke inhalation. We placed him in an ambulatory intensive care unit and provided lifesaving first aid, including breathing assistance and medication, and transferred him to the hospital in serious condition."

Initial investigations show that the first was caused by a space heater which was left on near the baby's crib.

The baby's grandfather and a woman who was in the apartment at the time both suffered light injuries and were transferred to Hadassah Ein Kerem.
