New York’s governor will be heading to Israel in the near future, as part of a “solidarity” mission following a recent attack by Iranian forces.

On Wednesday night, Iranian Revolutionary Guards forces operating out of Syria fired at least 20 rockets at northern Israel, prompting the IDF to respond with a series of airstrikes against Iranian targets in Syria.

According to the UK-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, 18 Iranian soldiers and 5 Syrian troops were killed in the strikes, which targeted a dozen different sites in Syria.

Tensions have been rising in the region in recent months, after an Iranian unmanned aircraft carrying explosives was shot down after it entered Israeli airspace in February. An Israeli fighter jet was shot down when Israeli forces attacked the T-4 base in Syria used by Iranian forces to control the unmanned aircraft which penetrated Israeli airspace.

On Wednesday night, New York State’s Governor Andrew Cuomo announced at the Jewish Community Relations Council’s New York City gala he would head to Israel to show “solidarity and support” with the Jewish state.

“I believe true friendship is shown not in the easy times, but in the hard times,” Cuomo said at the gala.

Cuomo referenced previous solidarity trips to Israel, including his 2002 visit to Israel at the height of the Second Intifada.

“In 2002, when suicide bombers were attacking Israeli buses and everybody left, there was no tourism, there were no visitors, I led a New York delegation as a sign of solidarity to go to Israel. In 2014, as Charlie mentioned, when Hamas was bombing Israel, we wrote a letter of support, the Prime Minister invited us to put together a delegation to visit and we headed a bipartisan delegation."

"It's these moments that dissolve the gray into black and white and ask each of us individually, where do you stand and who do you stand with? My answer is simple. As long as I am Governor of New York, this state stands 100 percent with Israel and we are proud."

During his address Wednesday night, Cuomo touted his state’s ties with Israel.

“I'm proud to say that the relationship [between the US and Israel] has its deepest roots right here in the State of New York. Our stories are intertwined.”

“New York and Israel are political bodies that share the same DNA. And for that reason we've always shared a special relationship. As a born and bred New Yorker, the Jewish people and the culture are embedded in me.”
